Weatherize your Home
Hope Community Builders has an ongoing weatherization program to increase the energy efficiency of your home. All our homes built since 2007 are energy efficient and are certified by EnergyStar® and EartheCraft®. As one can surmise we were in “green building” before it was in vogue. Weatherization addresses the needs of all types of houses and all types of situations: increasing comfort and decreasing utility bills.
EnergyStar® has estimated that a skilled contractor can help save up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs by weatherizing your home appropriately and will also increase the comfort level in your home by reducing cold or warm spots. http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=home_sealing.hm_improvement_sealing
The main task includes:
- Sealing penetrations in your house including:
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- HVAC
- Sealing attic doors : All of these penetrations are allowing exterior air to enter your house and compromise your heating/cooling system
- Upgrading your insulation in attic and walls
- Sealing joints and collars in duct work. This will:
- force the air in the supply duct to get to its intended destination rather than leak into wall cavities, the attic or craw space.
- stop the return duct from allowing air from unwanted places (attic or crawl space) to enter your duct system. This will prevent fumes and dust from contaminating the interior air in your house, thereby improving indoor air quality.
- Windows and doors
- Caulk and seal all windows and doors where the window or door frame meets the house frame
- Install storm doors where needed
- Install storm or replacement windows
- Consulting services to help you know what to do, what products to use and the processes to use to enable you to do as many of these tasks yourself.
- Referral to an independent energy auditor. The auditor will provide:
- an objective analysis of your house,
- information to help you understand how your house is performing
- an action plan to help you accomplish your weatherization objectives
